The squamous cells that coat the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck are where most malignancies that are collectively referred to as head and neck cancers start (for example, those inside the mouth, throat, and voice box). Squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck are the name for these cancers. Head and neck cancers can also start in the salivary glands, sinuses, muscles, or nerves in the head and neck, but these types of cancer are much less common than squamous cell carcinomas (bony top of the mouth).
