The anal canal is a short tube at the end of your rectum that is surrounded by muscle. The rectum is the colon's bottom section (large intestine). When you have a bowel movement, stool exits your body through the anal canal from the rectum. Cancer develops when some of the body's cells divide indefinitely. Cancer may remain in nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body as it grows, a process known as metastasis. Anal cancer begins in the cells surrounding or immediately inside the anal opening. A person's anal area may be found to have precancerous cells. These cells have a high risk of developing cancer over time. While this condition is treated differently than anal cancer, it is the reason for seeking treatment as soon as possible. Many anal cancers are discovered early because they are in an area that your doctor can easily see and reach. When people with any of the above symptoms undergo an anal exam, a diagnosis is frequently made. Anal cancer may also be discovered by chance during yearly physical examinations that include a digital rectal exam. The rectum, prostate, or other pelvic organs are examined during a rectal exam. Anal cancers can also be detected during a preventive colorectal screening test.
